At its annual dinner April 19, the Academic Women’s Network awarded Laura Bierut, MD, professor of psychiatry, and Katherine Weilbaecher, MD, associate professor of medicine, of cell biology and physiology and of pathology and immunology, the Faculty Mentor Award, which recognizes individuals who have served as an outstanding mentor to a female Washington University faculty member or trainee. Erik H. Clayton, PhD, research assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, was selected for the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Research Associateship Program. The NIST award provides opportunities for advanced training to a select group of scientists and engineers who give special promise of becoming creative leaders in research. …

Ursula Goodenough, PhD, professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, has received a three-year, $1,160,865 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for research titled “Systems Biology of Lipid Body Formation in the Green Alga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii.” …

Rachael K. Hinkle, graduate student in the Department of Political Science in Arts & Sciences, has received a one-year, $12,308 grant from the National Science Foundation for dissertation research titled “The Role of the U.S. Courts of Appeals in Legal Development: An Empirical Analysis.” Hinkle is conducting the research under the direction of James F. Spriggs, PhD, the Sidney W. Souers Professor of Government.
