Tussle between executive, judicial branches ‘reflect historical ignorance’

The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act has prompted some interesting and provocative issues about – and between – the president and the judicial branch, says Gregory P. Magarian, JD, professor of law and former clerk for retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. “These alarmed reactions reflect historical ignorance,” he says.

Problems in recycling cellular waste linked to clogged arteries

Researchers at the School of Medicine have found that problems with a digestive process in cells can clog arteries. The finding, reported in the April 4 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, could provide a target for future therapies aimed at preventing or reversing atherosclerosis.

Frankel installed as Hance Professor of Accounting

Richard M. Frankel, PhD, was installed March 21 as the Beverly and James Hance Professor of Accounting. Frankel joined Olin Business School in 2005 as associate professor of accounting and is an expert in financial accounting, which provides information to individuals outside a firm.

St. Louis Humanities Festival begins Friday

Beginning Friday, April 13, and continuing Saturday, April 14, WUSTL’s Center for the Humanities — with the Missouri Humanities Council, Webster University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis — will present the first annual St. Louis Humanities Festival. One of the speakers is novelist and Yosemite National Park Ranger Shelton Johnson (right).

The Academy of Science of St. Louis will honor 10 faculty members for their contributions and leadership in science and medicine. The Outstanding St. Louis Scientists Awards will be presented Thursday, April 19, at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel.
