Work, Families and Public Policy series continues Feb. 1

Faculty and graduate students from St. Louis-area universities with an interest in labor, households, health care, law and social welfare are invited to take part in a series of Monday brown-bag luncheon seminars to be held on the Danforth Campus biweekly through April 26.

In its 14th year, the Work, Families and Public Policy series features one-hour presentations on research interests of faculty from local and national universities. The series is designed to promote interdisciplinary research.

Presentations will be from noon-1 p.m. in Seigle Hall, Room 348.

The series begins Monday, Feb. 1, with a lecture by Shelly Lundberg, Ph.D., the Castor Professor of Economics at the University of Washington, on “Personality and Marital Surplus.”

The remaining presentations are:

• Feb. 15. Naomi Cahn, J.D., the John Theodore Fey Research Professor of Law at George Washington University, will speak about “Red Families v. Blue Families.”

• March 1. Natalia Kolesnikova, Ph.D., economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will discuss “The Role of Location in Evaluating Racial Wage Disparity.”

• March 15. Juan Pantano, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics at Washington University in St. Louis, will discuss “Parenting and Teenage Risky Behavior.”

• March 29. Joseph Price, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics at Brigham Young University, will speak about “The Effect of Parental Time Investments: Evidence from Natural Within-Family Variation.”

• April 12. Alvin Roth, Ph.D., the Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration at Harvard University, will discuss “Couples in the Labor Market.”

• April 26. Judith A. Seltzer, Ph.D., professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, will present “Doubling Up When Times Are Tough: A Pilot Study of Obligations to Share a Home in Response to Economic Hardship.”

Robert A. Pollak, Ph.D., the Hernreich Distinguished Professor of Economics in Arts & Sciences and at the Olin Business School, has been the lead organizer of the series for the past 13 years. Co-organizer is Michael W. Sherraden, Ph.D., the Benjamin E. Youngdahl Professor of Social Development and director of the Center for Social Development at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work.

The series is sponsored by the Olin Business School; the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and the Center for Social Development; the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the School of Law; the Department of Economics in Arts & Sciences; and the College of Arts & Sciences.
