The Department of Classics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis will host a memorial for Kevin Herbert, professor emeritus of classics, at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the Ballroom of the university’s 560 Music Center.
Herbert, who died Feb. 10 at age 93, taught at Washington University for more than 30 years. He was author of numerous books, monographs and catalogs, including three volumes on the university’s John Max Wulfing Collection and the memoir “Maximum Effort: The B-29s Against Japan” (1983), about his experiences as a tail gunner during World War II.
The memorial will feature remembrances from friends, colleagues and former students. In keeping with Herbert’s own interests, Thomas Palaima, PhD, professor of classics at the University of Texas at Austin — who frequently consulted with Herbert about the history of warfare — will deliver a lecture titled “War Stories Told, Untold and Retold from Troy to Tinian to Fort Campbell.” For more information or to RSVP, call 314-935-5123 or email classics@wustl.edu.
