Celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King

Shanti A. Parikh, PhD, associate professor of anthropology and of African and African-American studies, both in Arts & Sciences, reacts with great joy at being named co-recipient of the Rosa L. Parks Award during the university’s 24th annual celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 17, in Graham Chapel. Looking on are Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton (left) and Harvey R. Fields, PhD, assistant director for academic programs at Cornerstone: The Center for Advanced Learning. The Rosa L. Parks Award is presented annually to persons or organizations that exemplify the valor of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa L. Parks. Judge Jimmie Ewards of the 22nd Judicial Curcuit Court of St. Louis was this year’s other winner. “I receive this award with great excitement and humility,” Parikh says. “The work towards equality is not yet done, as the theme of the evening’s event reminds us. This award inspires me and gives me encouragement to continue the work of social justice here and around the world.”
