Washington University’s graduating medical students will do their residency training at hospitals from coast to coast and even in Canada.

These 117 soon-to-be physicians were among more than 16,000 graduating U.S. medical students who learned March 17 where they will do their residency training. Following graduation from the School of Medicine, 24 will train at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University, and six will train in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Other hospitals where School of Medicine students matched include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins Hospital, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, University of Washington, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.

About 25 graduating Washington University students will train in internal medicine. Seventeen were from the MD/PhD program.

According to the National Resident Matching Program, the most competitive fields nationally this year were dermatology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, radiation oncology, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery.

The National Resident Matching Program uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to align the preferences of residency programs to fill the residency training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.
