School of Medicine holds shoe drive

Washington University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to donate gently used and new shoes to raise funds for clean water in Africa.

From May 6-June 6, bring gently used and new shoes (tied or rubber-banded into pairs) to one of the drop-off bins located in:

  • Farrell Learning and Teaching Center Atrium
  • Seashell Lobby
  • McDonnell Pediatrics Research Building Lobby
  • BJC Institute of Health at Washington University School of Medicine link
  • 4444 Forest Park Lobby
  • 4480 Lobby

Once collected, George “The Shoeman” Hutchings will export the donated shoes to retailers in the developing world. The resale provides jobs and affordable footwear. Funds generated from the export of shoes provide well drilling rigs, water purification systems and hand pump repair micro businesses bringing clean, fresh water to those who don’t have it.
