University College in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis will host a reception titled “Food For Thought” for prospective students of the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) program at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Jimmy’s on the Park in Clayton, Mo.

William Shakespeare will be the topic of the “Food For Thought” event Aug. 4.
The evening’s topic will be “Why Shakespeare Matters,” presented by Robert E. Wiltenburg, PhD, dean of University College.
At the event, prospective students can meet faculty, staff and students from University College and learn about the MLA program. Experts will be available to answer individual questions on transferring, tuition, scholarships and balancing a full-time job and school.
The MLA program provides students the opportunity, at an advanced level of intellectual inquiry, to explore interdisciplinary perspectives that are the hallmark of a liberal arts education. Students pursue coursework and independent research with Washington University faculty in history, anthropology, literature, art, music, philosophy, politics, religion and science.
“In this program, unique in the St. Louis area, one reads the great books (or watches the great films), and asks the great questions — with the liveliest group of teachers and fellow students to be found anywhere,” Wiltenburg says. “As one of our recent graduates has put it, MLA might well stand for ‘Meaning of Life, And …’ ”
University College’s part-time evening programs have helped thousands of adults in St. Louis advance their careers, change their paths or enrich their personal lives.
The event is free and open to the public. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
