The baseball team won all five games last week to improve its overall record to 17-6 on the season.
The Bears posted a 12-7 win over Webster University March 21. On March 23, WUSTL posted a 7-3 win over University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and picked up a 5-3 win over Wheaton (Ill.) College in a game that was called due to rain in the eighth inning.
On March 24, the Bears rallied from an 8-0 deficit to beat Wheaton 10-9 in 12 innings on a single by freshman Chris Lowery, before earning a 7-2 win over UW-Platteville.
Offensively, senior Brandon Rogalski led WUSTL with a big week at the plate. He batted .615 (16-for-26) with four RBIs and eight runs scored, while also recording five stolen bases. With his performances, Rogalski moved into third on WUSTL’s all-time career hits list (183), fifth in career stolen bases (44), sixth in career doubles (38), and seventh in career RBIs (121).
The Bears host a three-game series against St. Norbert College Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1 at Kelly Field.
Swimming & diving competes at NCAA Championship
Junior Brendan Morin, and freshmen Sara Taege and Zane Turpin each earned All-America honors for WUSTL at the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships March 21-24 in Indianapolis.
Taege, the lone competitor for the WUSTL women, placed seventh in both the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley to earn All-America honors in both events.
Turpin finished 11th in the men’s 1,650 freestyle and Morin placed 13th in the 100 butterfly as both earned honorable mention All-America honors. Freshman Luke Dobben also competed at the championships for the Bears.
Softball goes 3-1 at St. Louis Invitational
The softball team posted a 3-1 record at the St. Louis Invitational March 24 and 25 at the WU Softball Field.
The Bears posted a sweep of Concordia College (10-1, 6-5) March 24 and 15 and a regional win over Augustana College (4-0) March 25. Sophomore outfielder Maggie Mullen hit .538 (7-13) with a double and a homerun in the four games, and also recorded 11 total bases in 13 at-bats for a .846 slugging percentage.
Senior pitcher Olivia Cook posted a 1-1 record with a 0.95 earned run average in 14 2/3 innings pitched. Cook allowed three hits and two earned runs in a 3-2 eight-inning loss to Augustana College March 24, and followed that up with a two-hit complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over Augustana the next day.
WUSTL (13-6) hosts a pair of doubleheaders against NAIA Harris-Stowe State University Saturday, March 31, and Fontbonne University on Sunday, April 1. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.
Men’s tennis sweeps Wheaton at home
The No. 11 men’s tennis team remained perfect at home this season with a 9-0 victory over Wheaton College (Ill.) March 24.
WUSTL is 5-0 this season at the Tao Tennis Center, and has won 12-straight matches at home dating back to last season.
The Bears (7-5) have a week off before hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at noon Saturday, March 31.
Track & field sweeps WUSTL Mini Meet
The men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to win nine events as they opened the outdoor season by sweeping the team titles at the WUSTL Mini Meet March 23.
The women had four event champions — sophomore Sarah Fisher (3,000-meter steeplechase), freshman Melissa Gilkey (javelin), sophomore Shannon Howell (400 hurdles), and senior Elizabeth Phillips (5,000).
Senior Ben Cutting (javelin), freshman Timothy Elliott (pole vault), junior David Hamm (5,000), senior Tyler Jackson (110 hurdles), and senior Justin Pieper (high jump) all won individual titles for the men.
The teams will compete at the second of three home outdoor meets, the Washington U. Invitational, Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31.
Women’s golf fifth at Northern Kentucky Invitational
The women’s golf team took home fifth-place honors at the Northern Kentucky Spring Invitational March 24 and 25 in Perry Park, Ky.
In a tournament that featured 12 NCAA Division II schools, WUSTL shot a two-day total of 629 (314-315) to improve on its 11th place finish from a year ago.
Junior Hannah Buck was the top finisher,shaving three strokes off her day-one total to finish in a tie for 11th place with a 153 (78 75, plus-9). Senior Sarah Miller competed as an individual and shot a two-day total of 188 (96-92, plus-44), good for 101st place.
WUSTL hosts the WU Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1, at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill.
