Washington University in St. Louis has been recognized as one of the top institutions in the nation for producing Fulbright students for 2013-14. Twelve Fulbright grants were awarded to current or recent WUSTL students for this academic year to fund various international educational exchange endeavors.
Washington University is tied as the 14th highest producer of Fulbright students among research institutions this year. In all, 12 of its 43 applicants, or 28 percent, won Fulbright awards. The distinction was published in The Chronicle of Higher Education in October.
“It speaks to the strength and talent of our students as well as the commitment of our WU Fulbright Campus Committee to provide constructive support to our applicants,” said Amy C. Suelzer, PhD, WUSTL’s Fulbright Program adviser and assistant director of International and Area Studies in Arts & Sciences.
More than 1,800 U.S. students, artists and young professionals in more than 100 different fields of study have been offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English and conduct research in more than 140 countries throughout the world beginning this fall.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 325,000 participants — chosen based on their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research and exchange ideas.
