Matava recognized as a top knee surgeon

Matthew J. Matava, MD, has been recognized as one of the top knee surgeons in North America by Orthopedics This Week, a newsletter for professionals in the field. The publication surveyed leaders in orthopedics, sports medicine and knee surgery to create a list of the finest sports knee physicians, teachers, researchers and administrators in the country.

A professor of orthopaedic surgery and of physical therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Matava is the co-chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Sports Medicine Service, head team physician for the St. Louis Rams and a team physician for the St. Louis Blues. He also serves as president of the NFL Physicians Society, a group founded in 1966 to provide excellence in the medical and surgical care of athletes in the National Football League and direction and support for the athletic trainers who work with those athletes.

Matava was recognized by Orthopedics This Week for his work with medical students, professional athletes and “weekend warriors.” In honoring him, the publication said, “As team physician for the St. Louis Rams, he has led the way as a clinical scientist on the sports knee. His dedication to teaching and education in this subject has been a revelation in sports medicine.”
