Volunteers plant native trees on campus

The students were part of a team of volunteers from the Wash U community that came together to plant 31 native trees and shrubs as part of a sustainable landscaping project. The Office of Sustainability notes that well-designed landscapes have the potential to provide much more than beauty, including a broad range of ecosystem services that have measurable economic, public health and environmental benefits. Washington University is working to incorporate ecosystem service thinking into landscape design, including storm-water management, reduction of urban heat-island effect, habitat creation, carbon sequestration, water filtration, air purification and energy conservation through building shading. Partners for the landscaping project on the south side of Busch Hall include the university’s chapter of Net Impact; SleeveaMessage; Bon Appetit; and Forest ReLeaf of Missouri. University Grounds and Landscape Design Manager Kent Theiling led the planting.
