Gephardt Institute presents inaugural Achievement in Community Engagement Awards​

​Honors go to Carpenter, Nunery and United Way of Greater St. Louis

The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University in St. Louis has announced the inaugural recipients of its Achievement in Community Engagement Awards.

They are Brian D. Carpenter, PhD, associate professor of psychology at Washington University in St. Louis; Leroy D. Nunery II, EdD, educational leader and founder of PlūsUltré LLC; and the United Way of Greater St. Louis.

The awards celebrate Washington University faculty, alumni and community partners who exhibit excellence in community engagement. The presentation will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Emerson Auditorium in Knight Hall on the Danforth Campus.

The honorees:

Carpenter

Brian Carpenter

Carpenter’s research focuses on the clinical psychology of aging, with an emphasis on family relationships in late life. His recent work explores the ways family members work together to make decisions regarding older adults. He also runs the Clinical Geropsychology Lab at the university and is the faculty lead for educational initiatives at the Friedman Center for Aging in the Institute for Public Health.

Carpenter brings his work to life as a trusted partner with community organizations that serve aging populations, listening to their needs as he conducts community-engaged research that informs community partner planning and builds capacity. Through teaching his course, “When I’m 64,” he also has given a new generation of students a passion for working with older adults.

Nunery

Leroy D. Nunery II

Nunery (MBA ’79) is a seasoned educational leader with executive experience across the K–Adult educational spectrum. He is founder and principal of PlūsUltré LLC, a management consulting practice specializing in strategy and operations for educational entities, and an adjunct faculty member in the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels Institute of Government.

Prior to founding PlūsUltré, he served as vice president of business services for Penn, where he engaged in the strategic planning and implementation of Penn’s West Philadelphia initiatives. His work helped foster a stronger relationship between West Philadelphia and the university and contributed to the area’s cultural and economic revitalization.

In addition, Nunery has served as deputy superintendent and acting superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, a corporate banker, and an executive with the National Basketball Association. He also serves on the board of several schools and organizations.

United Way of Greater St. Louis

The United Way partners with Washington University in numerous ways, helping people live measurably better lives.

This partnership has resulted in unique research endeavors, educational programs, and workshops and practicum opportunities for students. It is responsible for community engagement collaborations such as Ready by 21, which focuses on coordinating the systems around education, career readiness and health to ensure every young person is supported from birth through adulthood.

The United Way continues working with its partners to challenge the St. Louis community to engage with and improve the lives of others.
