He is the author of "The New York City Draft Riots: Their Significance for American Society and Politics in the Age of the Civil War," Oxford University Press. The 1990 book is considered the definite authority on this time in American history. Bernstein was awarded the George Washington Eggleston Prize by Yale University in 1985 for the doctoral dissertation that is the basis of this book. His next book, forthcoming from Oxford University Press, is "Stripes and Scars: The Revitalization of America and the Origins of the Civil War."
