Stone is an economic and ecological anthropologist whose primary focus is on African agrarian systems. She is interested in agricultural labor and its organization within households and within communities, with a special focus on the sexual division of labor. She has done field research in Nigeria, Senegal and Mauritania. She is also interested in the effects of globalization on local economies. She most recently co-edited a book on the topic of commodities and globalization as seen from an anthropological prerspective.
