Men’s basketball drops to 6-5

The men’s basketball team split a pair of games last week to drop its overall record to 6-5. Freshman Tim Cooney recorded the first double-double of his career with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Bears to a 67-52 home victory over Benedictine University Jan. 4. Cooney was one of four players to score in double figures for Washington University.

Junior Dylan Richter led the Bears with 17 points, also recording four assists, two blocks, two steals and two rebounds. Senior Spencer Gay scored 16 points with eight rebounds while swatting four shots and junior Alex Toth added 11 points while pulling down six boards.

On Jan. 8, the Bears suffered a 79-77 loss at the University of Chicago in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams. Gay recorded his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Ben Hoener (13 points) and Cooney (13 points) also scored in double figures. The Bears shot 49.1 percent (28-57) in the loss, and made a season-high 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from 3-point range.

WUSTL (6-5, 0-1 UAA) plays its final nonconference game of the season at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Webster University.
