India is emerging as a key environmental figure on the global stage.
During the recent climate change conference in Paris that resulted in a deal to cut emissions, India acknowledged its developing role in leading environmental change while also trying to ensure more of its citizens are added to the grid.
This week, another pivotal environmental summit is being held in India at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-Bombay), and Washington University in St. Louis will be well represented.
Leading the Washington University contingent are Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton and Pratim Biswas, PhD, the Lucy and Stanley Lopata Professor and Chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering at the School of Engineering & Applied Science.
Both Wrighton and Biswas will give talks to scientists and researchers gathered in Mumbai for the 5th International Conference on Advances in Energy Research. A team of Washington University professors also will attend.
The conference aims to address global energy concerns of depleting fossil fuels and climate change. Scientists plan to take stock of current status in research and development in energy, and have brainstorming sessions to set guidelines for the future, more sustainable path.
Wrighton delivers his plenary address, “The Role of Science and Technology in Meeting Global Energy Needs” on Tuesday, Dec. 15; Biswas gives his keynote, “The Energy-Environment Nexus: Global Challenges Addressed by Collaborative Education and Research,” the same day.
“Washington University in St. Louis has engaged in many fronts in its activities in India,” Biswas said. “One of our major partners is the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. The university is also networked with major corporations and other multinationals. Activities are wide ranged in areas of energy, environment and sustainability.”
Additionally, Washington University and IIT Bombay are partners of the U.S.-India Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Center and SERIIUS, the Solar Energy Research Institute for India and the United States.
