This past summer, a group of students from Washington University in St. Louis traveled to Guatemala to repair medical equipment at the nation’s largest public hospital.
“If we didn’t fix it, no one would,” said Imani Paul, a junior studying biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science and a member of the Washington University Guatemala Initiative. “It would be one less piece of lifesaving machinery for this hospital.”
Paul and other members of the organization also trained local engineers and residents to troubleshoot repairs.
Washington University Guatemala Initiative is one of several student groups that travel abroad to conduct meaningful and sustainable service with the support of the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement.
