Washington University in St. Louis departments are encouraged to considering hiring qualified students for part-time jobs through the Federal Work-Study Program. The U.S. Department of Education covers 50 percent of a student’s pay, and the university department pays the rest.
Student Financial Services reports qualified work-study students are available to perform any number of tasks in university offices and laboratories. Last year, 900 undergraduate work-study students earned more than $1 million in wages. Most students work an average of six to 10 hours a week.
Currently, about 200 departments employ student workers, a number James McDonald hopes to increase in 2015. The assistant director of student financial services said the Federal Work-Study Program is a boost to departments, which have found innovative ways to use student workers to improve their operations. The program also benefits the growing student body.
“As the size of our undergraduate class continues to grow, we have more students counting on earnings from part-time university jobs,” he said. “Having adequate job opportunities benefits both students and departments.”
Student Financial Services helps match eligible students to available jobs. Interested students should log in to ‘My FA Access’ and select ‘Student Employment’ from the left menu to search for open jobs.
